Ah, Sleeping With Sirens ? one of Florida?s finest bands. The sunshine state has done a great job cranking out talented musicians the past few years. For Sleeping With Sirens, it all started in 2010 with their debut full length ‘With Ears to See and Eyes to Hear’.
Consisting of ?ber high-pitched vocalist Kellin Quinn, guitarists Jesse Lawson and Jack Fowler, drummer Gabe Barham, and bassist Justin Hills, Sleeping With Sirens have progressed on their 2011 release ‘Let?s Cheers to This’. The record does not disappoint in the least. It maintains diversity, fresh sounds, and the melodic grit that the band is known for.
First up on ‘Let?s Cheers to This’ is the very catchy, different, and in your face track, ?Do It Now, Remember It Later.? With it?s hook of ?whoa oh oh oh? and the fast, driving instrumentals, an energetic tune to say the least. Quinn?s high voice cuts through well. He quickly sings the lyrics over the fast low-tom drumbeat. Fowler and Lawson soon hop in, meshing high note riffs over crunchy chords. Overall, the guitar work is great. The post-hardcore feel and aggression is kept alive, but it?s not monotonous. The one factor that makes this song, along with the others, is Quinn?s vocals. There is no denying that he has a mean set of pipes. As he sings the chorus, you can?t help but sing along, screaming ?whoa oh oh? over and again.
Third up is the tune ?Who Are You Now? an emotional track that is a slightly softer, but a thoughtful deviation for the band. With its ballad-like chorus, it will have crowds hugging instead of crowd surfing. The chorus beat is big, as Quinn asks, ?Who are you now / do you say what you want?? Once again his melodic, piercing voice shines through, as it bleeds into smooth falsettos here and there. Overall, the instrumentals in ?Who Are You Now? aren?t really unique, although the piano and acoustic break that weaves its way into the song towards the end is refreshing, and Quinn?s voice gives it the extra edge it needs.
?Tally It Up, Settle the Score? is the seventh track off of ‘Let?s Cheers to This’. It?s another solid song, and frankly, my personal favorite. It starts up with Quinn singing over a muted guitar chug and the full band soon jumps in together. Barham?s drumming is hectic, aggressive, and heightens the energy of the song. It compliments the guitar work of Lawson and Fowler. Quinn?s voice is unstoppable in this track, and his band mates back him up with occasional screams and minor harmonies. The climax is at the breakdown, which finds its way into the song after about two songs as Sleeping With Sirens shows their musical prowess. ?I hope you remember the last time we tried this from the start?? asks an angered, screaming voice. The band doesn?t overkill the breakdown, for it soon bleeds into a short, quiet refrain before bouncing back into the chorus.
Hate or love Sleeping With Sirens, they are talented. ‘Let?s Cheers to This’ picks up where ‘With Eyes to Hear and Ears to See’ left off as another progressive movement in the post-hardcore scene. Quinn?s unique voice sets Sleeping With Sirens apart from the rest, while musically the band has demonstrated an amazing instrumental prowess. This is definitely an album you’ll want to pick up (or download!).
